Include in your syllabus a time for your entire class to come and visit our offices, as a whole, or for private one-to-one scheduled appointments with a skilled Career Development Center professional. Consider scheduling a group career assessment for your class. Each of these interactions offers students the opportunity to learn about the vast array of services we have to support them with regard to reaching their career goals.
Individual career advising, depending on the particular needs of the student, often utilizes a variety of career assessment inventories/exercises, such as the STRONG Interest Inventory. A major goal of career advising is to show the student how delving into and reflecting upon one’s unique set of values, interests, personality and skills can suggest career paths that would be a good “fit” for the student.

What are Faculty and Staff Saying?
“Career Services presented a workshop on how to write a cover letter and a resume. The information provided was invaluable to my students, many of whom had no experience in writing cover letters. Additionally, one of the important things Career Services stressed was the idea of transferable skills. These presentations helped me utilize class time effectively while I was at a conference and directly enhanced the career transition learning outcomes in the department.”
Lori Dawson, Ph.D.
Professor, Psychology
“I think collaborating with Career Services to have the Washington Career Center recruiters come to my class was beneficial. My students learned about opportunities to do internships and earn course credit through this competitive national program. Many of them had never heard of the program before the presentation. I plan to continue working with Career Services to schedule presenters to come to my classes, where possible- l think it’s great for students!”
Miriam Plavin-Masterman
Assistant Professor, Business Administration and Economy
“I regularly announce the programs offered by Career Services for they provide important tools and experience to support the goals in my upper-class level courses. The early identification and acceptance of professional world realities and expectations help promote engagement and connections to real world applications of learned materials. Together, we increase the student’s understanding of WHY they need the material and become improved and enthusiastic learners, and valuable perspective employees.”
Alex Hill
Professor, Business Administration & Economics
“When presenting to my class they discuss the value of lifelong career planning and the specific support they offer regarding this. They also discuss the valuable internships available at Worcester State. The students consistently respond with positive feedback regarding their outstanding presentation. Every first-year student class should be required to have this valuable presentation.”
