Many people who engage in volunteer activities do so with the orientation of sympathetically helping out “poor people” or minority groups with their time, knowledge, and resources. This model assumes that those on the receiving end are helpless, and creates an unequal dynamic in the relationship. My workshop will engage participants in thinking about how their volunteerism, advocacy, and activism can be more meaningful to all involved if there is mutual respect and empathy on both sides.
