Worcester State University offers 3 ways for enrolled undergraduate students to register for a graduate course in the Worcester State Graduate School. Each pathway is designed for a specific student population, has differing course numbering systems, different tuition charges, and requires specific approvals.

Pathways Available

  • Who is eligible?
An enrolled undergraduate student who has earned a minimum of 90 credits and has a strong academic record is eligible to enroll in a 900-level graduate course. This student should be interested in taking a graduate course, but does not intend to use the course toward his or her undergraduate degree.

How will the credits be applied and listed on transcripts?
These courses are 900-level courses and will be listed that way on a student’s transcript with a letter grade. These courses do not apply towards a student’s undergraduate degree.

    What is the cost?
Students pay the graduate tuition and fees rate for these courses.

    Whose permission is needed?
The student will need approval from the course instructor(s), the graduate program coordinator, and the dean of graduate studies.

  • Who is eligible?
An enrolled undergraduate student who has earned a minimum of 90 credits and has a strong academic record is eligible to enroll in a 600-level course. This student should work with an advisor and plans to use the course toward his or her undergraduate degree requirement. It is possible that the student might pursue a graduate degree at Worcester State, but has not been admitted into a 4-Plus program.

How will the credits be applied/transcripted?
These courses are 600-level courses and will be listed that way on a student’s transcript with the letter grade. The Graduate School may accept these courses for graduate credit once the student is admitted to the Graduate School if permitted by the graduate program’s department. In this case, the courses will show as 600-level courses on the undergraduate transcript with a letter grade and as 900-level courses on the graduate transcript with a “grade” of “TR” for transfer.

    What is the cost?
Students pay the graduate tuition and fees rate for these courses.

    Whose permission is needed?
The student will need approval from the course instructor(s), undergraduate student advisor, graduate program coordinator, and dean of graduate studies.

  • Who is eligible?
An enrolled undergraduate student who has been admitted into a 4-Plus program at Worcester State is eligible to enroll in a 500-level course.

How will the credits be applied/transcripted?
These courses are 500-level courses and will be listed that way on the student’s transcript with the letter grade. Once matriculated into the graduate program, the courses will show as 500-level on the undergraduate transcript with a letter grade and as 900-level courses on the graduate transcript with a “grade” of “TR” for transfer.

    What is the cost?

    • For full-time, day students, taking a 500-level course will not increase your undergraduate costs.
    • For part-time, evening undergraduates, taking a 500-level course results in an additional charge of approximately $300—a savings of $550 because the class double-counts for both degrees.

    Whose permission is needed?
The student will need approval from the course instructor(s), undergraduate student advisor, graduate program coordinator, and dean of graduate studies.

Navigating Undergraduate Pathways to Graduate Enrollment

Eligibility criteria vary for each pathway, with students needing to meet minimum credit requirements and maintain strong academic records. Credits earned through these pathways are applied differently depending on the course level and intended degree program. Students must obtain approvals from course instructors, undergraduate advisors, graduate program coordinators, and the dean of graduate studies. Detailed information, including eligibility criteria, credit application processes, tuition costs, and approval forms, is provided for each pathway

I loved what I was learning in my undergraduate program at Worcester State, and it made sense to continue on to my graduate degree here.
