This article proposes a more holistic, interest-based teaching method in writing courses and defends the need for pop culture and media in first-year classes. It analyzes how discourse surrounding first-year pedagogy is informed by the 2010 political climate, which provides a nuanced mirror of today's fraught politics in American colleges.
