Staffed by friendly, knowledgeable peer consultants, the Writing Center is a space where students have productive conversations about their writing.
When you sit down with one of our trained consultants, you should plan to stick around for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the length of your paper or writing project. Each session with a peer writing consultant will consist largely of back and forth conversation.
Contrary to popular belief, Writing Center consultants are not accessible for “proofreading” essays for student writers—“proofreading” denotes a lack a conversation. We want to talk with you about your writing assignment(s) and/or experience(s), and work with you to find strategies to ameliorate issues.
Calling the work we do in the Writing Center “proofreading” also assumes that we only schedule appointments with writers in the editing stage, which is false. Our doctrine is: “All writers. All stages of writing.” This means that we welcome students with writing projects that are nearly finished, projects that are not started yet, and everything in between. What is more, the services we offer are not directed toward writers requiring any sort of special attention. We can accommodate anyone. After all, everyone can work toward being a better writer!
Remember, you set the goals of every session. You and your consultant will work together to achieve those goals during your session.
All services at the Writing Center are offered free of charge.
Students can request in-person or online appointments. To schedule an appointment or get more information about the many services available at the Writing Center, visit Woo for Writing. Students may also email the Writing Center (writingcenter@worcester.edu) or leave a message on our office phone (508-929-8112). Writing Consultants will monitor all channels in order to assist with appointment scheduling.
Every fall and spring semester, the Writing Center opens at the beginning of the third week and closes the day before Reading Day. All services are offered free of charge.
