WSU Remembers September 11th

The WSU community remembered those lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in particular 1990 graduate Robin Kaplan, in ceremonies on September 11 and 12, 2011. During a candlelight vigil on the 11th, President Barry Maloney laid a wreath with Ed Kaplan in memory of his beloved daughter in the memorial park on campus that bears her name. The ceremony also featured reflective songs, poetry, remarks and a then-and-now photo display. On the 12th, a campus-wide moment of silence was observed at 8:46 a.m., which began a flag-raising ceremony commemorating September 11th and honoring the service of our veterans. The flag raised during the ceremony belonged to WSU student and Army National Guard Specialist Mark Bastien. Bastien flew the flag at his forward operating base in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and carried it in his backpack on some missions. Four WSU student veterans, who also served at the Jalalabad base, helped raise the flag.
