Susanna Meyer (Communication Sciences and Disorders) recently attended the national meeting of the American Academy of Audiology, AudiologyNow! 2012 in Boston. The theme of the conference was "audiology means business." This meeting was attended by about 7,000 audiologists from around the world. Professor Meyer presented research conducted with graduate student Erin Flynn on firefighters' hearing and with Aimee St. Hillaire and Lori Arnold regarding hearing conservations for preteens.

Lyons Diamond Dedicated at Rockwood Park

On Saturday, April 21, The City of Worcester and Worcester State University officially dedicated the Kevin D. Lyons Baseball Diamond at Rockwood Park, just before the squads MASCAC doubleheader against Bridgewater State University.

The Honorable Joseph Petty served as the master of ceremonies to an event that brought several state and local dignitaries, the Lyons friends and family together to mark the occasion.

"Events like this aren't built by accident, they are built with cooperation, people working together and that is exactly how this field was built," said Petty. ?We couldn't think of a better person to name it after than Kevin Lyons."

Lyons was a two-time graduate of Worcester State - with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a masters degree in 1971, was a standout centerfielder and exceptional hitter on the 1964 and 1965 NESCAC Championship teams that posted a combined record of 26-1.

Lyons was inducted into the inaugural Worcester State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and he was an advocate for local youth and interscholastic athletic teams in the Worcester Community. He helped run the Press Box, a tavern on Lincoln Street, with his brother-in-law and helped make it a staple of the community.

Worcester State University and the Worcester State foundation contributed $540,000 toward 2.8 million, multi-year renovation project of Rockwood Field, which is city-owned property adjacent to the universities north parking lot.




WSU Students Bring Dance
Lessons to Chandler Magnet School

Friday, April 13 was a lucky day for grades K-6 at Chandler Magnet School because they danced their hearts out under the artistic direction of WSU choreographers, Nikki Beatrice '15, Spencer Hart '14, Lesli Patrock '15 and Delfi Vargas '13. As part of a service-learning experience in the Health Sciences Department, the choreographers taught the children a variety of dances, ranging from step dancing to hip hop to Latin to break dancing to free movement.

Chandler Magnet's Physical Education instructor, Christine McCarthy, welcomed the choreographers into four of her classes and provided a high level of assistance. The audience of more than 200 parents, fellow classmates, teachers and WSU students filled half the gym and provided that special attention performers love to make them shine.

"Works in Progress" began with the choreographers sharing some of their polished dance moves to a very appreciative audience. Vice Principal Christina Guertin, a dancer herself, was very supportive of the program and looks forward to seeing next fall's choreographers. Principal Ivonne Perez supported the dance project from beginning to end.


Students Help Local Residents
Collect $700k During Tax Season

By the end of the 2012 tax filing season, WSU student volunteers saw over 600 taxpayers, making this the most successful year ever. Thirteen WSU students and four Holy Cross students helped locals of all ages collect over $700,000 in federal refunds. The Worcester Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition, which includes WSU and three other sites, filed for over $2.5 million in refunds this season. Students will receive official recognition from the IRS for their work, which saves Worcester taxpayers tens of thousands in tax preparation fees each year.

The Senior Thesis art show opened last Wednesday evening featuring the culminating art work of Visual and Performing Arts seniors Bethany Eddy, Kayla Feist, Lukas Godaire, Brittni Kirk, and Bethany Strothers.

Celebration Draws Over 90 Displays
of Student and Faculty Research

Over 90 students and faculty showcased posters in the Student Center Blue Lounge and Exhibit Area at the 5th Annual Celebration of Scholarship and Creativity last Wednesday. This year's celebration included panel presentations that took place throughout campus, a senior thesis art exhibit and an evening documentary/panel discussion.

Annual Employee Recognition Event
The annual Employee Recognition event, hosted by the Human Resources Office, will be held on May 9, at 3 p.m. in the Blue Lounge. This yearly event recognizes employee milestones and retirements and is open to the entire campus community. The Human Resources Office is in the process of putting together the program. A list is currently available of those who will be recognized at this year's event.

Social Justice Summer Academy
Discount for Children of WSU Employees
The Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Equal Opportunity is excited to announce the opening of the Middle School Social Justice Academy for summer 2012. The purpose of the Social Justice Academy is to introduce students to topics regarding identity, equality, access, and equity. The 2012 SJA will provide participants with a diverse curriculum and a variety of age appropriate labs, activities and team-building exercises. The goals of the academy are to educate and engage students; establish friendships; and explore opportunities and careers in related fields.

The Middle School SJA is a weeklong education experience held from June 25-29. The program will run from 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. daily on the campus of Worcester State University. Lunch will be provided daily in the campus dining hall. The Middle School SJA program cost is $200 and includes instruction, lunch, and a program T-shirt.

Children of Worcester State University employees will be awarded a $50.00 reduction. Book Drive for K-8 Summer Reading
Worcester State University will once again participate in the annual Worcester "Give A Book" Drive. The drive is put on by "Worcester: The City that Reads" committee, which is led by Worcester school committee member John Monfredo '64, M.Ed. '67. The goal of the city-wide book drive is to collect K-8 level books for distribution by the Worcester Public Schools to students who don't have the means to obtain adequate books for summer reading. New or gently used books would be greatly appreciated. Books will be collected until May 15 in the Public Relations and Marketing Office (Shaughnessy Administration Building, Room 231). Road Race to Support WPS Health & Wellness Programs
The Worcester Educational Development Foundation is proud to offer the Foley 5K Road Race on Sunday, May 6 to promote fitness in the community, while also raising valuable funds for health and wellness programs in the Worcester Public Schools. Proceeds from race entry fees go directly towards supplying the necessary equipment to enhance programs in the Worcester Public Schools such as the acquisition of jump ropes and balls for recess, equipment for physical education and funds for movement type clubs. Not a runner? No problem! There is also a 2-mile walker-friendly course that allows you to participate in the fun without having to train for a full 5K.
