(WORCESTER, Mass.) — “Harriet Tubman, A One-Woman Play” will be performed by Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti on Wednesday, March 14 at 10 a.m. in the Sullivan Auditorium at Worcester State University as part of the WSU History and Political Science Department’s multi-year commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War.
Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Harriet Ross in 1822, was an African American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy. She escaped from slavery and rescued more than 70 slaves using the network known as the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Tubman devoted her life to helping those struggling for equality and civil rights and worked to promote the cause of women’s suffrage.
Quezaire-Presutti is a professional storyteller who combines her expertise in public speaking and historical research to create memorable interpretations, incorporating learning into each of her performances. She gives a dramatic performance in her interpretation of Harriet Tubman during the Civil War. She has performed in character to intergenerational audiences at national festivals, educational conferences, colleges, schools, and corporations.
“I am a living history performer that incorporates integrated learning fundamentals into my programs,” Quezaire-Presutti said. “Using historical information researched from biographical narratives and other sources, I portray historical and composite characterization with appropriate period clothing and few props. The program is proactive.”
There will also be a bibliographical presentation in the Eager Auditorium, located in Room 146 of the Sullivan Academic Center, at 2 p.m. during which Quezaire-Presutti will describe the research necessary to develop her dramatic interpretation of Harriet Tubman.
The History and Political Science Department cordially invites area schools, Worcester community members, university students, faculty, staff and the general public to share in the commemoration of the U.S. Civil War. All events are free and open to the public.
