(Worcester, Mass.) -- Worcester State University will host a ribbon cutting and official opening of the new wing at Dowden Hall, Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. The project adds 177 new beds to the residence hall.
The $19.1 million project, which created 558 construction jobs, was completed on time and under budget according to the Massachusetts State College Building Authority (MSCBA). The addition to the 20-year-old building has earned a LEED Gold level by the U.S. Green Building Council and 96 percent of all construction waste was recycled. The 100,000-square-foot building features a four-story glass entry facade, new common spaces, fitness equipment and quick dining options.
“We are so proud to be able to meet the increasing demand for residential space on our campus, while achieving LEED Gold status.” said President Janelle Ashley.

The project's design reoriented the existing 58,000-square-foot building around a 41,000-square-foot new wing. Sustainable design strategies in the residence hall include a natural-gas combined heat and power generation system, energy-conserving lighting, and windows and plumbing ensuring operational efficiency. Resource-saving building practices included the recycling of building materials and sourcing of locally produced materials during the 18-month construction process led by Milford-based Consigli Construction Co.
The project design was completed by Cambridge-based architects Prellwitz Chilinski Assoc. Inc. (PCA ), in partnership with Worcester State and the Massachusetts State College Building Authority (MSCBA).
Following the ribbon cutting, tours of the building will be conducted.
