The Next Step Program
Next Step is a program for adult non- traditional students who have
years of experience in a field and want to advance in their career with an
education that validates and enhances their work.
As an adult student who is in the workforce, you need a different kind of
experience than the traditional student.
The program offers assistance in navigating systems such as financial aid and
registration and specifically work with students in the Community Health, Urban
Studies and Computer Science majors.
Next Step provides academic counsel and works with community partners to provide
course material that is relevant in community settings. All of our instructors
have been practitioners.
The centerboard of the program is the portfolio course. Students are taught by
professors to write about learning that they have acquired through their life,
work and volunteer experience. At the end of the process, students may receive
an average of 18 prior learning credits, plus 6 credits for completing the
two-semester course. [Note: the portfolio program is not available in all
majors.]
